The Impact of Virtual Production on our Programs: Synthesizing Best Practices into New 21st Century Curriculum

This presentation will give educators the opportunity to see UNREAL 5.1's new features, learn how the use of simple, low-cost technology such as the HTC VIVE MARS tracker to create a successful virtual production, and to get educators ready for the most up-to-date LED wall technology by highlighting the partnering of UNLV FILM with Vū Studios in professional virtual production.

While virtual production has been around for a while within the film and television industry, it gained more attention after the success of The Mandalorian and The Batman. Nonetheless, most film programs are not in a position to invest in teaching their students this new process.

The main objective of this presentation is to unpack and detail how to achieve “final pixel” on the day of the shoot, by examining essential virtual pre-production approaches: how to undertake digital scouting, “subtractive” virtual art direction and to rely on fundamental practice to inform the virtual production workflow.

The goal is to ensure students, faculty and administration have the tools to embrace virtual production today, and have a better grasp of it for a more secure curricular program building.

Note: This session will prepare the attendees for the Vū LED wall demonstration taking place on Sunday and Monday in the BEA exhibit hall.
